During the Gold Rush era, portable gold dredges was something of the future, as all the miners were restricted to working only on the banks of rivers, areas that were only easily reached with hand tools. There are three types of portable gold dredges that are the most commonly used; the surface dredge, the underwater dredge, and the submersible dredging tube. Extremely fine particles of gold are pumped to a sluice box on the surface with the use of a suction hose. The sluice box either floats on the surface, or rests on the bank of the river. The underwater dredge is almost identical to the submersible dredging tube. Both of which are not as popular as the surface dredge, as they lack in the ability of recovering fine gold. They are designed mainly for their portability and compactness, yet is limited to its applications, as it is awkward to handle when submerged. They must be held firm and level when underwater, and they can’t reach hard to get places. Water is pumped into the bend of the machine at a high pressure, where it creates a vacuum. These dredging machines came to be in the early 1900’s, as huge three hundred pound machines that covered the rivers, but as technology advanced, so did the miner’s experience, as well as that of the dredge companies.
